Computer X Human

The other day I was making an iPhone icon for the Touch Screens set and I had an epiphany. I usually make rough 3D mockups for icons when they are going to be in a complex angle, and my luck the iPhone dimensions are very easy to find on the internet. I loaded this info into the 3D app and modeled the basic geometry of the 1st generation iPhone. When done I sent it to my friend Dan Wiersema for a quick review. When Dan saw it (he didn’t know my process at the time) he almost instantly said: “It’s a little bulky!”

Why is it bulky? I made it accurately, in perfect real world proportions…

iPhone dimensions and geometry

Well, it was bulky. The 1st generation iPhone is bulky, especially when seen at some angles, so I had do slim it down a bit.

I learned a good lesson from it: How much should we trust a computer exactness?

The image below is another good example. Which button label is properly aligned?
